Location, Location, Location

The real issue with the landfill regulations being proposed that would allow CCW landfills in Franklin County is that Franklin County is a county of streams, rivers and creeks. The area has such amazing water resources because of geology and location on one of this nation’s major rivers. Below us is dolomite and limestone that dissolve to form fissures that water from the surface trickles down through to form underground reservoirs of fresh, clean water.

The location in the Missouri River floodplain that Ameren MO wants to use for a huge toxic coal waste dump site has groundwater often at the surface. It is the last place you would think of placing wastes that should not come in contact with water. Even if it could be “flood-proofed” or water proofed…why would you choose the most expensive and dangerous place to landfill this dry material? Oh, right…you just pass on the cost to consumers…good or bad, safe or dangerous…no responsibility to do the right thing and keep the population safe and keep down the cost of land filling and long-term costs of disease and damages.

See for yourself…is would this be where you would put coal ash wastes (contains arsenic, lead, mercury, radioactive waste…and carcinogenic chromium)?
